Okay - I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on several of machines at home (love it btw), and my kids and I love to play OpenArena.  It's been working fine (mostly) for more than a month.

Now suddenly when we try to join the server we always use, it stops at Awaiting Snapshot.  It will sit there for hours if I let it.  So next I tried to connect to one of the other 59 servers listed and it says "Server/Client Mismatch" on most of them.

I assume the ones that show suspended ARE actually suspended and that's why I can't connect to them.  Some others seem to require a password (at least that's what the error says).

Is there only one free server? If so, how do I now get past the awaiting snapshot problem?

If you are using Ubuntu and using OpenArena from the repositories you will have to upgrade your version.

Ubuntu use version 0.6.0 of OpenArena so you will have to install version 0.7.1 to allow you to use the servers again.

I thought the synaptic package manager was supposed to keep things updated.  I'm downloading the package from getdeb.net right now.  Hopefully that will fix the problem.  Short of using getdeb.net, how would one update this game otherwise?

From one of the download sites.
You would most likely download version 0.7.0 from here: http://files.moddb.com/7803/download-openarena-070-win32linux-i386-z/

Then download the patch(0.7.1) from here: http://files.moddb.com/8198/download-openarena-071-patch/

Well, it's installed.  Not it tells me invalid game folder on the one server I've been using...  What now?

Well - It is working now on all the severs except the one that I usually used.  That's fine though, now I have MANY servers available to me.  Perhaps that guy needs to update his software too.

Thanks for your help - It's all good now.  I just don't understand why my automatic updates in ubuntu didn't upgrade the software for me.

The server that doesn't work any more is an older version. When you upgraded, you are now able to use the .7.0 servers, but the .6.0 servers are no longer compatible with your install.

After a release of the Distro the official repositories do not get updated. Unless a security patch is required or a problem occurred that has affected many people and needs fixed. In other words it becomes static to reduce problems and keep stability.

Gotcha, that makes sense except when you CAN'T play a game included in the repository with out updating it.

So apt-get remove openarena openarena-data or what ever Ubuntu names the packages, then download the zip file from one of the mirrors.

Besides, with the manner that some games get updated you are better off installing outside of the package manager.
