I notice certain players are able to leap fast and far. My first assumption would be that they are using a cheat program or something. I'm trying to figure out how is this possible? I'd love to learn how to do it. If there is a site that a teaches this, I'd appeciate someone sending a link

ITS CALLED STRAFE JUMPING

jumping at a diagonal repeatedly, and alternating the direction

this is a lot of stuff, not just strafe jumping, mostly for defrag :/

I've been wondering how one could temporarily disable strafe-jumping (ie, govern it much the way sprinting is governed in RtCW). I've noticed a few player mods (the only one that comes directly to mind is the rail-gun based freeze tag mod; sorry I can't remember the name) that completely restrict it, but that seems to slow the gameplay down a far too much. On the other hand strafe-jumping when against a skilled player can make all weapons except the machine and rail gun virtually useless.

Is this a stupid idea?

If you are interested in learning more about strafing, jumping, climbing e.t.c you can visit http://rainbow.sytes.net
Not only do we run a few servers with the Quake 3 mod Defrag which allows for training on any sort of maps, with or with cheats, we also have some really experienced players who more than gladly will help you with any questions that might arise. Not to mention demos/videos/tutorials and much more..

My advice would be to look up "Genesis the Beginning" on youtube.  You should come up with a great Tricking/Strafe tutorial video.

I checked that video out. Its off the hook but the moves are hard to get down correctly. Just need to practice some more.

It takes a good amount of time getting the timing and movement right, and I can promise you that there are times when you feel that you will never get it right. But then, all of a sudden you realise that you are jumping longer, you are running faster and you are aiming better...so there you go, the first rule of defrag: never give up.

You can also join #rainbow on irc.freenode.net if you want to talk to other players who are also doing defrag to get some more tips and advice.
