HI,

I am getting a problem where the game crashes with a signal 11 on the PPC. I've tried the hardy package from Ubuntu and to make sure I've downloaded the data from http://openarena.ws and compiled version 0.7.0. The only difference iss that on the compilled version I get a bit of a woosh sound but it crashes at almost exactly the same point. (In fact it does crash in exactly thre same way if I run the game with +set no_sound 1).

Your running a PPC machine with Ubuntu on it?

From what I can see your audio initialized fine. What are your hardware specifications?

Yes it's a PPC with Ubuntu hardy running on it.

It's (not up to much but better than my old ubuntu PC that I ran ioquake3 on) 1GHz, 512MB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 (AGP 4x).

The issue happens with both the ati driver and the raedon driver setup in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. With the latter set up I can get a respectable 1500 FPS out of glxgears.

It probably wont help that your running a Beta version of Hardy(8.04). I suggest going back to the stable release of Gutsy(7.10).

From previous experience I'd say it was an ATi problem... Try running other Quake3 engine supported games(Enemy Territory, springs to mind, it's free, as in beer). However being a PPC processor, usually requires the code to be compiled specifically for it.

Try downloading the game from the main page: http://openarena.ws/files.htm

And trying that.

Gusty is a bit of a no go for PPC users. Hardy beta is already much more stable. I have tried Alien arena and it lets me into the menu but crashes once the level has loaded but before entering it.

So think it's an ATI problem. Is it just a conflict with the hardware as different drivers produce the same error? Or is there something I could be trying? I'm happy to go and try to talk to the Ubuntu people but I could do with a better idea of what's going wrong than it's an ATI thing.

Your best bet would be to ask at the ubuntuforums. However I don't think it's is specifically an ATi problem.

A bit of searching states it could be caused by overheating.Though there isn't much on the error when it comes to PPC processors.

Doing a bit more searching uncovers that someone else was having problems with a Mac Mini(PPC) with an ATi Card.

What I don't understand is when you are getting this error. Doing some research tells me that you are trying to run a dedicated server rather than the game client.

It's not the sound as you are getting past initializing that. Initializing the render passes fine so I wouldn't think it to be a ATi problem.

I doubt it's overheating as it happens at exactly the same point every time. However it does sound like there is a conflict between quake 3 arena based games and the PPC hardware. The signal 11 appears to be due to an attempt to access memory that is out of range.

64 bit Linux can also exit with a signal 11 sometimes, but it usually happens when pressing the "Leave" button making it somewhat less serious.

The engine uses some C-style memory optimizations that beaks if the memory layout is different (or compiler memory optimizations is used).

It was considered a good idea at the time and required to fully utilize the power of C

I'm not running the dedicated server. I'm trying to run the game client.

The crash happens during the opening animation where the words open and arena rush onto the screen and it's just where it makes a woosh sound.

Surely since it works for PPC on OSX it should work for PPC on Linux it's the same hardware. Or does it not work for PPC at all?

at least you are lucky enough to get that far. on my imac (granted a lot older hardware than yours) i cant even get it to get past the initialization without dying, and im only trying to run the dedicated server after all Sad  oh and im also using the hardy beta, but gutsy gave pretty much the same error when i tried last time so your situation doesnt seem to be hardy specific to me.

um.... that link is for osx, not ppc linux.
at one time you did have a ppc linux download (i found it pretty much all over the place) but everyone linked to your site and it seems its no longer there.

ya, i know how that is... i was maintaining a website myself for a while and just kinda neglected it. eventually just shut it down completely.

well, with those binaries i get the same "illegal instruction" error i posted on my thread. hopefully mikey will have better luck than i have.

so there seems to be some problems in the code itself...
anyway it worked fine on my ubuntu 6.10 installation, haven't tried recently (and both gutsy hardy was working very bad on my ibook, i switched back to debian...).

one final thought: you should try to download the ioq3 binaries, rename baseoa to baseq3 and see if the problem happens also with that one...

What is the difference between the ones you compiled and the ones I compiled? What steps should I take if I want to do it myself? Also what's happening with the sound? Is it working because the sound's disabled? Does that mean that the hardware fault was to do with sound?

i'd be happy if i could get as far as you do on my imac, i dont need sound for my intentions Sad

edit: holy crap, the ioquake binaries work, well sorta. client doesnt work but the dedicated binary works, it just bitches about not having the quake 3 pak0 and i cant seem to connect to it with the OA client (probably because of the lack of a config file).  question is, where to go from here?

OK so still no sound. I tried to copy the BASEQ3 files from the original quake 3 CD but didn't help (just in case the sounds were in there).

I still don't know how jackoverfull compiled his binaries because the 2 ways I tried resulted in the  same error. I'd love to know what you did.

sorry, but i didn't do anything special: the ppc linux version was easier to build that the mac one...

at the time i had an ubuntu edgy installation with sounds and acceleration, i installed the dependencies (should be libogg-dev, libvorbis-dev, libsdl-dev) and ran make, the binaries built fine and sound worked. that was done with the sources of oa 0.6 and 0.7. the only problem i had was with the 0.6 binary, that had some minor graphic glitches, the 0.7 worked perfectly.
anyway, i haven't tried them with recent versions of ubuntu, since 7.10 had serius problems with my hardware and the snapshot of 8.04 are working even worse.
i reinstalled debian testing some days ago, but i haven't had the time to configure anything (i still need to set up the airport express card, that this time seems to be no longer working with the old firmware i used in the past years, and to check if graphic acceleration is running).

Not that I'm able to test it, but its the only change I can come to think of.

it could be.

but not for the 0.7 sources or the svn ones: that ones were working fine also with 4.0.1. i'm only having problems with gcc4 with the ones you posted some days ago...

wish i really could help more, but since my mac takes so long to compile anything i never really got to learn everything yet Sad

oh and i ran a round or two on my ioquake-oa server on it and eventually it crashed Sad
so looks like while i finally have it running, im in mikey's shoes now with the dedicated server x.x
