Hey there, I'm new. I want to try out OA on my ubuntu 7.10 installation. I installed it using apt-get from the repositories but whatever the default resolution is for the game isn't supported by my monitor.

How might I go about altering the resolution? At the moment I have to restart my x-server to see anything again.

I have:

P4 2.8ghz
1 gb RAM
nvidia geforce 7600gt

If you need any more info, please let me know.

Thanks.

the default resolution is 640x480, which is usually supported by pretty much every monitor out there. you will need to edit this section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add 640x480 in there if its not already there:

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device     "Card0"
   Monitor    "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
   DefaultFbBpp 32
   SubSection "Display"
      Viewport   0 0
      Depth     24
      Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"   <-  edit this part
   EndSubSection
EndSection

dont take it word for word, i just kinda took it from a random website for an example since im in windows atm. your xorg.conf entry may differ slightly, but the modes part is the same.

i actually had the opposite problem, for some reason my ubuntu install when i first got it working wouldnt go any higher than 640x480 wether it was a game or not.

Well there can be multiple reasons. I had the same symptoms with a different problem. If you have a TFT screen you might be missing MaxVertRefresh 75 in your xorg-file.

However you can do this to change the resoltuin:

Run the command; gedit ~/.openarena/baseoa/q3config.cfg

In the file find these lines:

seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_customwidth "1600"
seta r_customheight "1200"

and set them correct. (The correct setting of r_mode is -1 if you do it this way)

Quote
seta r_customwidth "1600"
seta r_customheight "1200"

I changed these to 1024x768 as that's the highest my cheap TFT can take.

Unfortunately it still isn't working and defaults to 640x480 according to the terminal output. I'm not really confident enough to mess about with xorg.conf as I've broken stuff before doing that!

I'll see if I can get it working in a window...

edit: hmmm.... in a window it's enormous and I can't see the right hand side of the window. Also, the sound is a bit funny but I'll worry about that later. This is all a bit confusing...

Well in that case the correct values should be:
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_customwidth "1024"
seta r_customheight "768"

Again: Remember the r_mode line or the custom width and height will be ignored.

i was actually going to suggest that way as an alternate but i forgot the r values so i didnt Sad
i suggested the xorg.conf way because for some reason ubuntu omits quite a few things from xorg.conf. i think it has something to do with that "configless x" thing they have.

try hitting alt-enter and see if it fullscreens. also try using the ~ key to see if the command dropdown thing comes up to see if the window is really in focus. also, if you have compiz fusion enabled disable it, it can cause quite a few goofy problems.

i had to change bind for the console (if you're talking about the one in-game), when in linux as the usual key was called something entirely different and couldn't be bound.
