Well I started messing around with GIMP today and came up with a great idea for OA. Well since mappers and modelers seem to have a shortage of GPL textures... I said to myself why not build a texture library where all the textures are GPL! just saying if anyone wants to help I'm pretty sure I can get a website going in no time. I'll just need to check with the GPL people on more of a clarification on the license for media. That said I should ask them to make a GPL and LGPL for media what do you think?

Developing a good collection of GPL'ed textures would be really great. I've been working on a new set of textures for some time now, and I'd be glad to release them under the GPL if I can get my photo reference sources to agree to it.

I think the huge lack of good GPL'ed textures out there is really holding this project back a lot, especially for mappers. A project where a few good texture artists collaborate to release even one or two coherent high-quality texture packs under the GPL would go a long way to making this game better.

Edit: My reference sources agreed, so you can look forward to a texture set from me sometime in the next month or two Smiley
You can see a preview of them here. Cheesy

ok I am looking to host the project at sourceforge unless fromhell would like the project to be part of OA. If it will not be part of OA then it will be at sourceforge but it will meet the requirements to be OA compatible. hehe now other projects cant call us clip art stealers (not naming them...)  Looking for people's opinions especially fromhell's and the rest of the main devs. Also if it is not part of OA what will it be called I came up with LITL pronounced little (Like an Image Texture Library)

I will be leaving today on tomorrow on a cruise and I would hope to see an answer when I conme back from one of the OA devs when I come back on Saturday. If I do not have an answer by then I'll just set it up as an independent project.

take a look at
http://forum.freegamedev.net/index.php?t=thread&frm_id=29

and

http://search.freegamedev.net/

they host more than 100k items! It is done by simply crawling through many free svns.

Also freegamer has setup an svn repository for free art:

I'd be careful about that since it also crawls non-Free SVNs derived from copyrighted material, like UFO:AI.

asking when OA3 will be done won't get OA3 done.
Progress of OA3 currently occurs behind closed doors alone

I do not provide technical support either.

true that.  might as well start a my own texture library and would be more than welcome to give them to OA since I want 1.0 to be awesome. I see textures as tyhe only slow down for this project.

even more interesting should be http://wiki.freegamedev.net/index.php/Free_3D_and_2D_art_and_audio_resources#Maps.2C_materials.2C_models.2C_textures and http://wiki.freegamedev.net/index.php/Free_3D_and_2D_art_and_audio_resources#Photography
