fromhell can generally be found at the openarena IRC.

Though it's best to post on the forums your question, fromhell generally doesn't like private messages, from my knowledge. Smiley

and legal discussion will stall my fun art times, so don't do it

asking when OA3 will be done won't get OA3 done.
Progress of OA3 currently occurs behind closed doors alone

I do not provide technical support either.

Thanks everyone well I will post this here then and maybe she can help me answer my question.  I am a developer for the iphone I have asked this question around the forum but I thought I should direct my question to the developers. Under the gpl can OA and included maps etc be ported for commercial use? I wanted to port to the iphone and sell commercially. I was told I could on the forum as long as I made the ported source code available, but I wanted to clarify. Thank you.

Porting to the iPhone is impossible by design. There was an article about it on Linux.com some time ago.

The GPLv2 does as a minimum require the source code to be provided.

The iPhone SDK eula require the source code to be kept secret and non-free.

you can do it using the unofficial sdk, as most of the iphone programs were did at this time.

i'm sure that ioq3 can be adapted with that sdk and once you have ioq3...you have openarena!

but about selling commercially...good luck: you have to release the sources, so someone will soon take them, recompile and give everything for free...

Yeah, there's a problem with porting the _whole_ of ioq3 to a different chipset and platform, and it would be morally wrong if contributers didn't get anything in return.

it is difficult, but surely not impossible...
and i'm sure that ioq3 will be ported to the iphone/ipod touch in less than an year.

Don't forget that all devs should have to shell out $s to get iPhones and iPods. Also, how the hell can you play with one big touchpad?

that's clear. although i suppose that some preliminar work can be done with the emulator that apple provides.

two possible solutions.
1) the speedometer (not sure on the original english name of the thing): it will play like a game on the wii. difficult to master, but could be very fast once you're used to.

2) a virtual keyboard. quake 2 is playable that way inside the playstation emulator.
For example the game could be played portrait mode with a left section of the screen with virtual controls for forward, backward, strafes, jump and duck, a right, bigger, one for viewing the game and looking around with your finger(s) and a small bar in the lowest part of the screen for triggering the fire button with your thumbs.

The interface itself is the problem: not thinking of an usable interface (there are lots of possible configs) but coding it. Unless ioq3 for iphone/itouch comes out from someone with commercial intentions it's probable that it will come out very soon...without an usable interface (that will come later).

hmm..  suggestion: If someone dont want pm's then make sure it  is known BEFORE some idiot posts a load of help and offers assistance.  It may leave a bitter taste for the people that could make a difference.
