funny though, now that the majority of servers have switched to 7.6 we have a new update... I certainly expect that once all servers are finally on 7.7 we will have another update so playing online remains frustrating Tongue (ha ha ha)

That's what happens with a game that is still heavily in development. Though now that the worst bugs from 0.7.6 have been resolved with 0.7.7 patch. The next major update will most likely be the 0.8.0 release. Smiley

Originally it was the plan to just add an extra pak-file, so that 0.7.7 would be backwards compatible to 0.7.6 (like 0.7.0 and 0.7.1). However a few things required engine changes: UI crash and protocol, so it was not to be.

I have  a strong feeling that there will be an 0.8.1 a month or so after 0.8.0 just like 0.7.0-0.7.1 and 0.7.6-0.7.7 but I hope it can just be pk3 patches. And the way I think it can be archived is by freezing the engine a lot earlier than 0.7.6

imo we need to prepare a release and then playtest it for a week or two. i'm pretty sure most of the bugs would get squashed.
the aim must be to make a 0.8.0 version that replaces all the old versions so we don't get a divided community. it would benefit openarena a lot, i think :>

Let's have a real testing phase before releasing 0.8

i agree: a solid 0.8.0 would be a real benefit to oa.

Testing for 0.8.0 could begin August 1, where 0.8.0 RC1 would roll out then.
RC1 would probably be a reduced quality release to discourage the spread of it, news, and more version conflicts
Also during testing there may be some demo recording fun involved because I want to include a few demos to ship with OA to demonstrate the game with humans playing rather than bots as well as some benchmark tests.

ok, but i have to inform that i may not be available on middle august and middle july for the compile (on july i will stay a week totally without my macs with some friends and on august i will pass some time in japan, leaving the macs at home...).

i should be able to be there on august 1 and other dates, as long i know the date some time before.

I hate to bring up a bug, but it seems that in 7.7 mac version, the game consistently stalls when logging into a server.  I get all the way to "awaiting snapshot..." and then it never goes any further.  However, if I exit and then log in again it goes fine.  Always have to do it twice.  what gives?

no idea...on my mac this doesn't happen...

you may try to reset openarena (trashing the folder "OpenArena" that is inside your user's "Library>Application Support" folder). also, maybe you should try on another network configuration.

buts I guess no hurry... there are no 7.7 CTF servers yet where my ping is below 150 so until then I'll be waiting anyway!

OK, newby question.

For Linux, do I copy openarena.i386 over top of openarena.bin in the installation folder? Also, what is oa_ded.i386?

Thanks

I love the 0.7.x generation.
Anyway, this is mainly a bugfix release. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you upgrade from 0.7.6 to 0.7.7 (or rather, from 0.7.1 to 0.7.6 to 0.7.7 for half of you)

- Fixed "Getting stuck bug"
- Fixed logging bug
- Fixed UI crash
- Fixed overflow in Multiplayer list + Some of beast's changes to server list (longer names)
- Instantgib and All rockets disabled during single player startup
- Clears nextmap after single player
- Windows only: new SDL.dll allows Caps Lock and Num Lock to be used as keys.
- Using protocol number 69, this should only now show servers running 0.7.7 (In other words, no more lotsofservers with 'invalid game folder' error)

For those who don't read the front page, then get your rear there!

I use the latest patch 0.7.7 and I get stuck to other player, what "getting stuck"is fixed?

Greatz
