Interesting. Is OA486 meant to be a homage to 486 games or to actually run on a 486?

Patent Issues with GSM 06.10
Philips is claiming intellectual property on GSM 06.10. They haven't contacted the authors of this library, but at least two large companies that wanted to integrate GSM 06.10 codecs into their products have been approached; one decided to pull their codec, another to pull just the encoder and leave the decoder. (So, apparently, at least some lawyers think the intellectual property applies only to one half of the process.)

You want to make OA minimal, meant of size, or you want to make it possible to run in high fps on crappy hardware?

all 5 there's also a different style and more culture compatible content (i.e. no sling-clad tiny-nippled huge-breasted women here)
I haven't thought of modeling anything for it yet though

I don't know to be honest!!! OA486 is aiming for that 10mb mark. I know it can hit that with the simplicity of assets in question.

Well, I don't know how MIDIs are allowed in a GPLed game, but I think only MIDI can be that small in filesize... other ideas?

There shouldn't be any GPL-related problems with using MIDI. I think tracker files might be better for this kind of thing. They can be really small (without being chiptunes, too).

Avoid MIDI, it is lousy on Linux and Vista.

I think simply from an aesthetic standpoint that tracker files are a better option. There are many very small (20k or fewer) tracked songs out there, not all of which are chiptunes, so size isn't a significant issue.

Check this out: http://www.theprodukkt.com/kkriegerTheir game is 96kb, but with about half or maybe 1/4th of the options OA has.. Still even if it was 1%, 9.6mb for a game like openarena isn't much! The whole game has to be rewritten I think, but the result is good if you want to stay under the 10mb mark

The reason it can be 96kb is that none of the textures are are stored with in it, they are all generated by your cpu while it is being loaded.

It's not about the media quality though. OA486 would settle for beyond minimal.
My own motivation is lacking since suiting the pro gamer niche is the least of my worries, but this project exists if anyone wishes to make stuff for it. I haven't shown any examples of an art direction for it though, but I know it's about being tiny in the memory footprint.

I know, but you could do that with OA too maybe
