There is some guys over at the UFO:AI site that does/has a lot of music.  Maybe some of it is usable for this game too, or he might be convinced to do new music too.

Psymong, his website is:
www.8hz.co.uk
also www.8hz.co.uk/games_main.html

Also PeterJanik
http://ufo.myexp.de/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=864
www.janikmusic.com

I also do some, but my music is too relaxed for a game like this. :-)

The license isn't defined at all it seems. It does NOT mean it is okay that we can use them

(sorry, need to be very picky for an all gpl project like this, no exceptions)

So at this point, we're waiting for someone to write music for the game? I wouldn't mind at least a title screen beat or something. I actually like no music because if you have a good sound system, it's easy to tell where your opponent is. Sound always plays a major role in games like these.

with the current menu system in place it's not currently possible to make a default "menu" jingle.

it's possible in the "missionpack" ui code though.

Yes, they didn't explicitly state it.  But both the composers gave email addresses, and UFO:AI is also a GPL game.

and UFO:AI is also a GPL game.
probably only engine-wise though. The content currently treads on the XCOM ip (and the Halo ip as well since they have weapons modeled exactly after the convenant's plasma weapons last time i checked)

'Creative commons' sounds about right, my music is free to beg, borrow or steal, as long as it's put to good use and I'm credited, I'm happy Smile

i wrote this song in 20 minutes, that is also the name of the song.  if anyone cares to use it, i can put in a melody and expand on it to make it better.

i am considering writing a few other songs if you need more.

ah right, the link:

Well... like I said one could contact the author, and publish this specific versions of the music GPL... but it's only a suggestion.

this link will hopefully clear up some of the license confusion that some people are having:

Hello everyone, Hi Reenen Wink

I'm happy for you guys to use my music, under any license that would be convenient for the project.
However, I'd also much prefer to compose some new music with the game in mind.

I've got quite a lot on the go at the moment, so my contributions might be slow at first. But I'm always keen to work on some games music Smiley
So, choose a few tracks of mine (if any) that you want to use and (if you want) I'll get to work composing some new music ASAP.

All the best guys, impressive project by the way, I'm downloading the latest version as I type...
Cheers,

This is btw not relevant for artistic stuff.

It is relevant when Creative Commons licenses are GPL incompatible. from the link I posted above:
Quote
This is a non-copyleft free license for artistic works and entertainment works. Please don't use it for software or documentation, since it is incompatible with the GNU GPL and with the GNU FDL.

and:
Quote
The GNU GPL can be used for general data which is not software, as long as one can determine what the definition of "source code" refers to in the particular case.

Can't get much clearer than "it is incompatible with the GNU GPL and with the GNU FDL"

Hello again guys,

I'm currently working on 3 or 4 tracks that would be suitable for the project, I'll post up some rough versions sometime soon.

Cheers,

Here's my commentary on it, although I know I'm not part of the development team:

OpenArena01.ogg sounds like it'd fit as Menu music, it sounds a bit too calm to be battle music.
OpenArena02.ogg sounds pretty good for battle music, but it shouldn't be played at Max volume because it will do a good job of drowning out the sound.
OpenArena03.ogg, I don't think the intro part would be necessary, if it's going to be used as a battle song.  The loop alone will do nicely, in my opinion.

I actually listened to these three while playing (had Winamp running in the background as I played) and the second and third loops really felt proper for a first person shooter.

Also I forgot to say i've committed these in the SVN but with different filenames (for backwards compatibility with levels that point to Quake3 music files)

Thanks for your comments Pheonix, I think the first one was planned for use with the spacey jump-pad level. But they can all be changed if they turn out not to work so well in-game.

And leileilol: thanks for all your honest and attentive feedback.

I'll probably be back in the IRC channel some time in the future, whenever I've got some new tracks that might be suitable.

Cheers guys,
