Before I begin, I'd like to say that I hope this works, otherwise I'll probably feel silly. Grin

I've come up with a new OA competition. Everyone is welcome to play. It's a time trial contest called "Fastest To 50". The aim: try to reach 50 frags as fast as you can against 3 bots.

The rules are simple:
Quote
  • Everyone must face the same 3 bots: Angelyss, Sergei and Skelebot
  • All bots must be at level 2 (Bring It On)
  • Pure server - no cheats and no mods. Set timelimit to "0" and fraglimit to "50".
  • You must provide a demo as proof of your achievement. Screenshots won't cut it.
  • The time recorded is the time on the clock when the "_____ hit the fraglimit." message first appears. More than one player can share the record.

Everyone is encouraged to have a go. Hopefully some fast times and great demos will be produced. Those of you who feel you may not be good enough to compete can watch everyone's demos and perhaps learn some things you didn't know. Smiley

I've set a few times myself to get the ball rolling.
Have fun!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below is the list of map records. Please stick to these Deathmatch maps for now. If this idea takes off, then we can do more. Smiley
The top 3 times for each map are displayed.

Nice idea Cheesy

You could probably set up a server and have the demos auto recorded along, also events like time could be parsed from the logs.

I like the thought of having custom bots on the server, maybe an annoying one that camps with railgun and a really difficult one who hardly misses. The last one could have a low skill level to balance it out. The demos would be a good laugh to watch Cheesy

It's not a silly idea at all but it might be better if you could make a config which you could /exec and it loads the map along with the bots? You could then link the maps on your list with a config for each map and be able to add/remove bots to suit as each map varies in size. If you want to try it on a live server then I could contrib one if you like but you would need to have a config set up so that the bots can play with a single human. You could always restrict the maxclients but I'm sure it can be done so that you could have spectators and rotate the players for each round. I could easily set up a stats page and display them in console after each round..  I can always shout on jack thompson if I get stuck Cheesy  One good thing about having a live server is players could connect to it and compete with live players but still be playing bots.. so there is always somewhere to go if your bored and the public servers are empty Cheesy

Thanks missbehaving Smiley

The competition is something where the player sets the game up in single-player mode and posts their demo here and I update the list, so everyone's ping is the same and the playing field is level.

If you would like to try an online server with this game style, that would be great Cheesy I don't know much about running online servers though, so I wouldn't really be able to help at all, except to suggest maxping = 0. It could be a fun thing. Humorous bots would be cool. Wink

Yea, I wouldn't be able to take care of it on my own so if you find any little helpers then I can still help with the server if need be.

If the server is unlagged then there is no issue with ping as long as your rate is stable.

I guess a local config could still be used though. Some things like..
/fraglimit 50
/timelimit 0

.. are easy enough. But the slightly more tricky bit is putting in the bots (since this is a command) if your not familiar with configs...

Quote
addbot     add one bot <botlib> name of the bot library <name> name of the bot <skin> skin of the bot <charfile> file with the bot character <charname> name of the character - "Mr. Elusive" bots can be given a fractional skill when adding them from the console. for instance use "/addbot grunt 4.6 blue" to add a 4.5 skill Grunt to team blue.

Then you could do /exec mapname.cfg - and it starts with everything set up. Maybe someone will help with this too, I'm not that good with that stuff either Cheesy

I'm not sure that pure on single player mode works because people can change anything they want locally and I guess the demo would play back fine on a standard set up. Still fun though providing there are no lamers Smiley

LIST UPDATED Smiley

@ missbehaving:
It's a bit of a bummer abut the server, but I guess we should see if this idea takes off before worrying too much about that Wink
I'm not sure that pure on single player mode works because people can change anything they want locally and I guess the demo would play back fine on a standard set up. Still fun though providing there are no lamers Smiley
I didn't even consider that. Most players are honest enough I hope.

@ Gerbil:
I considered TDM as the game mode, but I thought that theoretically, times could be slightly faster in FFA, as you can attack a bot that is preoccupied with another bot and the kill would be easier. (I could be wrong though). Also, your times are formidable. Shocked

@zuma:
Your time is awesome too. It was 4:31 by the way, so you got another second off Cheesy

@ Armageddon_Man:
Easily beatable. U_U
You have the worlds fastest "official" time so far Grin  (Yours was also a second faster than you thought it was)
OA_DM6 isn't on the list because DM6ISH is virtually the same, and I consider it to be the better of the two.

Seeing these demos got me thinking: I suck in OA Smiley
Will try to beat my times though. I don't think I can beat any of times from this thread.

Well, times havn't been recorded for every map yet, so you could still submit your record for one of those maps Smiley practice makes perfect in any case Cheesy

I have played 2 or 3 times to beat the records. So may be easy to beat mines with some training.
Anyway, the OA_SHINE record is very good.
And what to say about Zumz on wrackdm17. His record is almost unbeatable. I got no less than 4:10 on it, but I keep trying.

This is a good training for OA adicts. Thanks ChaoticSoldier.

One more thing, keep an eye on my demos and realized that Im not rocket intensive. Maybe this is the trick.

See you soon, hope you break my records soon.
