seeing cheaty screenshots like these makes me unmotivated to work on oa.

well i can understand the use of that setting, some ppl arent as fortunate and need to use them, ppl that use them for an advantage is who you gotta worrie about, which its ugly and most ppl wont do that

best way to optimize:
scrap up some dough to buy a simple geforce or radeon card not of the MX, FX or '000', '200', '500' variety.
A Geforce2 GTS is enough.

r_detailTextures 0 helps alot of fillrate-sucky cards (which apparently every 'serious' gamer HAS TO LIVE WITH???), does a better job than break-all-the-lighting and gimping the game up.

cg_simpleItems 1 is a very good for processors in the 100-400MHz range as well

cg_draw3dIcons 0 benefits Voodoo-based hardware a lot, and Pentiums.

r_primitives 2 speeds the game up on Radeon-based hardware without sacrificing anything.

i haven't done any tests to verify this but i guess it should affect the framerate on slow graphic cards.
pick a model that has a low amount of triangles and then use cg_forcemodel "1" to force all the other players/bots to use the same model as you.

here's a list of triangles used in different models for openarena.
the totals are for the three different level of details used for the model, different LoDs are used depending on how far away the model is.
the total amount in the three columns are the added triangles of the head, upper and lower parts of the characters.
i've added the quake 3 models of anarki and biker for reference.

How did you get the amount of triangles used ?

Q3 models have really few ...

note: angelyss has more in LoD2 than in LoD1 (! :p)

i loaded up the models in maya with the muskoka plugin and added the trianglecount of the different parts (head, lower, upper).

yes, it took some time Tongue

cacanotes: yes it seems strange that angelyss would have more triangles in LoD2 - so it might be a typo or some bad maths when i added them together Tongue

I think we should create a config generator or config optimization tutorial on the wiki, it would benefit allot of people with older hardware and make the game more playable for more people.
