those stats would be interesting to see when a new version is released. how many pick up the new version and how many stay on the old versions

could you do a script that show the differences between the openarena versions?

0.8.1 vs 0.8.0 etc down to 0.7.1?

0.7.7 => 69
0.8.0 => 70
0.8.1 => 71

No, no good. It just puts numbers to what we all knew (at least the ones who don't filter the server lists). There are a  ton of servers that nobody uses. Well, a good share of those are used as a bot playground. Will nobody think of the environment? Bring down your server if nobody plays it, for the love of god. It infuriates me when I have to scroll down a dozen of servers to find somewhere with a couple of players at least--not because of the scrolling, of course.

Also, they don't do any good to the game. What will a new OA player see? A depressing collection of servers full of bots. Why bother playing online then? And why bothering playing at all if not online? There was a recent post about that pretty recently (which was dealt with with the utmost consideration, I should say). With less servers the small user base would be concentrated and you could always find some matches to play. The transition from 0.7.1 to 0.7.6 and later to 0.8 was very damaging and I have the feeling that the game never quite recovered from it (put Quake Live on top of that).

Ok, one day stats.
What we can see here: Always more bots than players.

Please shut down the empty servers. No one and really NO ONE needs these.
And i think we dont need servers with 5-8 bots( there are many of them )!!!
Take a look warsow: 88 players 14 bots, i think it's ok.

Beginners: You will destroy the community with your full-of-bots servers, this game is more than firing all over the place( take a look at the 16ppl DM servers: yeah 16 players on aggressor...this can make fun??? ). PLEASE only open servers if there are no hosts with low pings.

If this is not your opinion: please do it for the environment.

I'm sorry for that post, but it really piss me off.

Also bad that many of public servers do the same.
Would be nice to see some servers running only one map like oasago2 24/7. Some servers with only 2 or 3 excellent maps in rotation.
Why almost all servers use default rules (timelimit, capturelimit...)?

From all amount of OA servers there're very few that have some custom stuff on it.
There're very few servers which run mods, and most of those which do are often empty. It's more related to problem that people expect from game to be already complete for playing "out of the box", not that it will require to run mods not for changes in gameplay, but to have some features that every player could wanted to have.

Too high player limit on servers. No fun to play CTF with 16 players, most of OA CTF maps are small so anything higher than 5v5 is crowded. Lowering of player limit will make use for more servers and improve quality of games.

i agree with miow on servers that have too many open slots. 16 players in ctf is not ideal. and ffa is even worse - ffa maps with 32 open slots on aggressor, wtf? imo all above 12 slots for ffa is too much, unless there's an enourmous map. open up the ffa server browser and look around far too many servers run with that many slots and then fill up the server with bots.

I think some players would enjoy a elimination-server too. CA is great to learn weapons and movement...and its fun.

But what can we do? I think almost no server-admin will read that thread Sad .

Hmm... yeah... there is no CA fight, neither servers... same with TDM...ok, there is some server, but nobody uses them. I love last man standing too, but also no server,no community for that. I heard that sometimes the uM guys play clan arena,but hey, some players arent enought to make a normal living society for that.The clans play(this doesnt mean just and only) CTF, the others FFA. Tournament is somehow living, but...

i am a server admin, and looking for new ideas to improve my server. the changes will be done when i see if my server is having a good amount of players, so then my work will be worth it...

i have a lot of ideas to improve it too, but it always depends on players...

and other thing, qstat can give me the exactly number of players that joined my server???

how can i see that?

You seem to blame admins for having servers running,
- You can't know if your server will be used or not, even if it stays empty for weeks, or if some people use it from time to time, its use is still unsure. Popularity is a weird thing. You have to deal with user habits, new servers may not have success, you may already have a player base if your server is dedicated to a clan for instance. Administrating a server takes time and you may not want to regularly play with rules and map rotation, check if your rules are redundant with another server and so on.
- Also, the problem is not having more servers (I think having more doesn't harm), the problem is with filtering the server list so as to easily find what you want. If empty servers or bots (why making stats on them ?!) bother you, there are filtering rules. You can eventually use some external server browser if the ingame browser isn't handy. The problem with online FPS like OA is there are so much parameters that it's a pain to sort servers well, and the game browser traditionnally only lists name, gametype and slots, still these informations may not be enough (what about the rotation ? does the server use custom maps ?). It may be nice if admins could give a more detailed description of their server to explain how they intend to rule it.
- willing to "concentrate" players, I'm still not sure it's possible. Players dispatching is "natural", some players (often beginners) prefer to play on unpopular server even if they have higher ping. Some beginners like crowded server even if it's a mess, otherwise they wouldn't go on them, it's a way for them to have their chance... Of course I'm not sure they'll learn to play better that way, but at least they may feel less frustrated, and so they'll stay on OA and improve Wink Sometimes I prefer to play against 3 or 4 players than against 8 on a 10 players CTF map, almost a mentality rather than a number of slots available problem. You don't have to join servers where you find there is too many people to your taste, you may just start invading an empty server and wait for duke nukem to join :p.
- If admins don't read you, you can eventually contact them : (DO NOT LINK) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/Servers . We rarely receive suggestions from players, feedback isn't bad and keeps responsibles motivated. Usually you change something on your server when you feel some need, according to your own need, but it can take some time and you'd tend to ignore the rest and leave your servers be and unattended. Of course, admins are lazy too and that's some kind of problem Wink
