Hi, everyone,
What's happened to map rotations on popular servers? I come online when it's evening in Europe, but if it's not the rush hour, there are not many interesting hosts.

These days the only choice I can see is
- superctf with sago only
- a noob host with bases*
- rofl all rockets
- several instantGib servers (i don't like it)

Back in 2008 there were maps like:
-vast13, all weapons
-ctf4ish, all weapons
-a gray map with a jump pad behind the flag, all weapons
-oa2ctf, all weapons
-even inyard map, not very dynamic, usually with less skilled players, but much better than the gay oa-base*.

where's it all gone now?

You're quite right.
- Evil was setting up a server with a few interesting maps (13vast,...), but now is it down ?
- In Super server, they take the bet you can vote for any map if you are bored
- ctf4ish-only is still available on uM Range server, they also got their variants. Maybe they have oa_ctf2 on some other servers but with no rotation and it's not liked enough to bring people

I recently set up ROFL Various Couscous Cheesy because I thought there was lacking variety in CTF servers.
Here is the actual map rotation :

Code:
set a1 "g_warmup 5 ; g_gametype 4; map oasago2; set nextmap vstr a2"
set a2 "g_warmup 5 ; g_gametype 4; map ctf_inyard_v3; set nextmap vstr a3"
set a3 "g_warmup 5 ; g_gametype 4; map ps9ctf; set nextmap vstr a4"
set a4 "g_warmup 5 ; g_gametype 4; map oa_ctf4ishum1; set nextmap vstr a5"
set a5 "g_warmup 20; g_gametype 9; map oasago2; set nextmap vstr a6"
set a6 "g_warmup 15; g_gametype 4; map ctf_compromise; set nextmap vstr a7"
set a7 "g_warmup 20; g_gametype 3; map wrackdm17; set nextmap vstr a8"
set a8 "g_warmup 10; g_gametype 4; map am_icyhell; set nextmap vstr a9"
set a9 "g_warmup 5; map oa_spirit3; set nextmap vstr a1"

It might change soon though, because when you play on not familiar map and when there is not a lot of people you get bored, so I may delete a few maps and put some more popular ones instead.
Unfortunately there seems to be network problems on this server (only with OA I think) and I'm not experienced enough to know where the problem comes from, but ping is usually good, so it's worth trying. You're welcome Wink I don't play a lot these days but I try to get there when I want to play OA.

if you don't mind the ping on north american servers, then "cheers" is a pretty good server, it has 3wave maps. You'll have to enable auto download Smiley

Why more than 5 secs warmup? in 4 secs everyone has loaded the map, and the map restarts 16 seconds later (when you set the warmup to 20) so it's useless to do something and you waste 16secs..

This is because when you change gamemode, teams are screwed up and everyone turns spectator ; so it takes time, first to realize you changed gamemode Cheesy then to go in the menu, then select "join blue/red".

It's the same and even worse for elimination mode, if you didn't have the time to join, then you'll have to wait next round otherwise you'll only be able to spec.

The problem isn't a lack of servers, but that nobody plays on the servers with good rotation.  I use to run a server with a large rotation, but people stopped playing on it after all the insta-gib servers came around.  I don't really see the apeal in insta-gib so I shut my server down.  We just need a couple people in different parts of the world to all set up servers with the same agreed upon configuration without things like basses, super and insta.

IE,
NorthAmerica-___
Europe-______
EastAsia____
all with the same rotation that people love!

We made a server with maprotation including all new maps of the upcoming release.
Even all 3 modes were selectable (all weapons, insta, rockets) and the activated mode sets the servers name (e.g. "GoD|Insta").
But nobody joins the server. Players who joins the arena, left if they see one of the new maps.

Time for a service release aka oa .91!

How you mean 'selectable'? Can you callvote for it? I wanted to implement that in my server (callvote dm would exec deathmatch.cfg or something) but I couldn't find how. I thought I read something about it before, but i remembered it wrong.

You can do that with recent versions of OAX, check this thread Wink http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=1908.msg22589#msg22589

(just added the info on the wiki)

As I posted in another topic,

The only servers that seem to be busy are

Digichalk 0.8.1
Ciggaweed

These two servers are DM, they run stock maps, and there are often players there.
Digichalk is also unlagged which is great.

Unfortunatly, voting permissions are very tight. All you can do really is nextmap, g_dowarmup, and map_restart

You should venture out and play the on CTF servers (Nemesis, Cheers, suPer,CTF for example). Personally, DM are okay but the thrill is only temporary. CTF games are intense and gives you purpose instead of fragging any and everything you come across. Not sure what your skills level, but you will definitely improve overall.

lol did you miss the instantgib ctf servers? There are usually plenty of players.
Also [z]fastweapsmallmaps and supeR,CTF are often crowded.
And not to forget the defrag servers..
