SVN synching

Because I'm a noob when it comes to SVNs and such how do you synch up with one so you have the bleeding edge of things? Can this be done without having first installed the game onto the target machine(long story short, i'm having to use a thumbdrive at another computer to port things over to mine)?

Unless you're pointing me to what to look for through google this does nothing to help. the whole point of me asking here rather than googling is so the answers are constaintly on hand HERE as opposed to giving every tom dick and harry the tried, true, and annoying 'RTFM' response.
