Hi Folks, I can not get this game to run in Ubuntu 11.04. I get to the beginning where I can choose single player or network but after that nothing. Any suggestions?

Hi & welcome,

1) Did you install the game from openarena.ws website, or from Ubuntu repositories ?
2) Can you try running the game from a terminal, and paste the log ? (like typing /usr/bin/openarena in it)
3) Can you describe a bit more what happens when you click the play button, in particular with the Single Player campaign ?

FYI, once you started the game, you can open some console with SHIFT+ESC, it may give you hints of what is going wrong.

Installed with sudo apt-get install openarena  In single player mode it allows me to choose which Level and then nothing. I tried looking at console but there is nothing unusual going on.

Indeed. What I meant is "nothing" isn't a very explanatory word when describing what happens on a computer screen.
So, when you click the level, then "fight" (do you see the fight button ?), it ... freezes ?
Normally, right after you select the level and hit start, you have a "difficulty selection menu", then you click "fight" once again, and you got a quick "Awaiting gamestate" message and then a background image of the level preview where you see items being loaded.

You may try to run the game, open console, and type:

Are you running jackd (Jack Audio Connection Kit) ? I'd rather guess pulseaudio if you use Ubuntu.

Your problem of level not starting is quite likely related to that sound issue. You may try to stop pulseaudio prior to running OA and see if it runs better (sudo /etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop)

Edit: there is apparently some better way to temporarily suspend pulseaudio. You'd have to start OA typing this in a terminal:
