Trying to guess: in the sky over oa_shouse map, there is a big "moon" showed (behind clouds, see screenshot attached).

I suppose he tried to enhance it by giving a shadow effect...
I don't know if that would be needed... in real world, when the moon isn't full, the dark part is not so visible... anyway that isn't Earth's moon and so in theory there may be another lighting source (a two-stars system?) that may enlight a bit also the dark side of the moon...

As you can see in the images there

the dark side, even with earthshine, is much darker than in Scimmia's image (I mean, the difference between the dark side and the light side is more prominent). Again, a major planetshine may be possible, taking in account we are in science-fiction environment.  Smiley

thanks for explaining. not sure why but i don't see the moon in my version.

regarding the op i'd like to see it with less ambient lighting when it's not full and with a texture i don't see repeating (so scale it up? might require making it smaller in the map's sky). textures might be modified from one of the planets at http://planetpixelemporium.com/planets.html. or generate your own textures using Planet Editor (GPL) or something similar (http://sourceforge.net/projects/fracplanet/, http://sourceforge.net/projects/planetgenesis/).
