I like the small download size of OpenArena. My current q3 directory is 4 gigs and i'm sure that is small compared to some.

So i suggest keeping the distro <= 100 megs.

The majority of complaints i've heard thus far is map related.

My basic point is to keep the base small. Maybe four tight maps and four tight models leaving add-on maps and models for a oa add-on community.

I guess i really don't know know the intention of oa; is it intended to be a complete replacement of q3a or simply a stand alone q3?

idk, my 2 cents

Someone else told me the same thing in regards to my game, and, although it is a good thing to keep the game size in mind (In other words, not 10 gigs or something), I think we shouldn't limit ourselves to that. I think we should let it grow, maybe there'll come a point where it's too big, I'm not saying a couple gigs but maybe 200, 300 MB (We can always try and compress the packages), then we can continue to develop but as add-on packages. I'm not saying 100 MB is a bad limit, I agree with you, it's a nice download size, but I don't think we should limit ourselves based on size. But yeah, nice idea.

quake 3's around 650 megs I think. that's far too much for me. part of it were the movies for different tiers. i don't really think we should have a problem keeping the thing small as long as we dont put too much garbage in it. we shouldn't really limit ourselves to a specified size, but at the same time, we must be carefull of this program being bogged down with crap.

Quake3 is 450mb actually, and its bloat comes from its music (large WAV files) and video.

In OpenArena's case, it's actually the map and model textures bloating it since it's double resolution. Cutting this down to quake3-ish levels would get OA's size down to around 17mb (!)

The current SVN build (at the time of this writing) is 97.2mb.

To be honest I don't really care what the limit is for file size, as long as its enough to have a good variety of content. So I'd say, 200 MB +.

There is a joke there about size, but I'll keep it to myself...

It really shouldn't matter how big of a file size it is, just as long as it looks good and doesn't kill the q3a feel.

Maybe we could have a low-res and a high res .pk3 up for download?

But...eh maybe not.
