I have a Toshiba Libretto U100 and am running the "intel" X driver packaged for Feisty. Using the laptop screen X will just restart. With the external monitor plugged in the screen goes blank and the machine no longer responds to keyboard or mouse input. I have to power it off and back on. I wonder if the 1280x768 laptop screen resolution is a problem? I tried setting the resolution to 1024x768 using command line switches, but I am not sure if that took. Regardless, X still puked. When plugged into an external monitor, it works about 50% of the time. I tried running it with and without the --quiet option. That does not seem to be the solution. Any ideas how to fix this or how to troubleshoot further? There are some generic errors in the X log, but they are the same when the game starts and when it doesn't.

Do you have another machine to test if the machine is actually frozen (using ssh to open a remote connection)?  That means the difference between an X issue and a kernel issue.

Only if X isn't configured properly

Have you tried the magic Sys Rq reboot sequence  hold alt+sysrq (Usually found on the print screen key) then with those keys pressed, press s then u and then b which will sync your filesystems, remount them read only and then reboot.

If that doesn't work ssh into the machine and
Code:
echo s > /proc/sysrq-trigger
echo u > /proc/sysrq-trigger
echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger

If that doesn't work you have a kernel issue, if it does you have an X configuration issue.

unlike rancid dipstick, this is very helpful. I have ssh installed, so I will try that the next time it happens. What should happen when I enter the three echo lines at the bottom of your post?

rancid, please go somewhere else and stop posting your nonsense. you were helpful before, so don't be a jackass.

I got out of X and ran openarena from the command line. It did not start but threw an error referencing framebuffer. So, I went in to my xorg.conf and enabled framebuffer support. I actually started from the laptop screen. With its fine 7" diagonal viewing area, I had about 5 minutes of being fragbait. That was fun. I am going to try it with the external monitor today and see if it is solved. It does seem to make a difference whether or not I use the --quiet option.
