Is there a way to turn this off?

Also, is there a config file with more advanced graphics options or does this have to done through the console?

I did finally find it in the controls menu.  I was thinking it'd be in Game Setup, but didn't even think to click on controls.

 set up- > controls -> shoot -> auto switch weapons-> off
