Title: Voice Chat
Post by: lparcshinoda on August 11, 2008, 05:19:41 PM
I can't use Voice Chat .... i binded the key ... before applying the server fix when using the key no effect could be seen or heard. After the server fix I see on top of the screen the text VoIP chat [ ] but nothing happens (no voice heard by others). Am I doing it wrong ??

Thanks for the help.

To make VoIP work you need two things:

Rate must be 25000 (LAN/Cable/etc) to make VoIP work at all
You must be using openAL otherwise you cannot record voice (but you can hear others)

rate is set to 50000, and openAL is enabled but I still can't use it :P

Running Windows XP,

I didn't even get the "VoIP Chat [    ]" you were mentionning, but that command helped :
/cl_voip 1

I dunno what is meant to be between the brackets, but while speaking with talk key active it does nothing much.
/sv_maxrate 25000 (server-side)
/rate 25000 (client-side)
...were also set.

I'll test that a bit more.

I don't have a microphone myself so I have never tested it.

Note that even if openAL is enabled in game it will only be used if it finds a openAL installed (openal.dll) otherwise it will fall back to SDL sound.

I've found DLL there : http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx
http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/oalinst.zip
I just had to run the .exe file in it, it installs correctly.

And now I see the volume bar changing when I talk ;)

I'm not sure, but maybe these DLL could come with OA ?

Try on some populated servers ;)
Seems some hear nothing, I asked someone to try cl_voip 1, it stayed at 0 with an error such as "Latched" and not much more infos.

Bringing the console down while in game.
/cl_voip 1

You may also check that : http://svn.icculus.org/quake3/trunk/voip-readme.txt?revision=1420&view=markup
