Title: Open Source mascots?
Post by: jumalauta on May 10, 2010, 08:15:06 PM
In Quake III a long time ago I used a Tux model that was quite fun =p

But, in OpenArena, are there any plans to bring back the old tux model or even add more mascots like BSD's Beastie or Konqi etc?

I'd love to see that :)

no never

There was going to be a mascot pack, then I learned that most prominent mascots aren't actually GPL friendly and considering this is a multiplatform game it would be just crossing the line to some politics and propoganda over operating systems I do not want to take part in. If you want a shocker, I use Windows.

Penguin's the closest you'll ever get! Otherwise you have your third party option (http://leileilol.mancubus.net/leiware/download.php?view.85). Also this one can represent the iMac (http://leileilol.mancubus.net/leiware/download.php?view.87)

I did model Konqi but never completed him, but I also realized even WM wars are just as bad as OS wars and GNOME has no character equivelant so I didn't do it. Just make believe that Liz is his daughter.

Though if I use Creative Commons for a mascot pack, a license I personally loath for its vagueness and increasing mindshare, it wouldn't have much of a problem. But then I wouldn't bundle it with OA, but who needs it bundled anyway?

Another problem is my favorite problem - the proportions. If you were to make them realistically sized, it'd be cheating. If you'd make them medium sized, they'd clip through a ton of things. Also, holding the weapon would be a challenge for the simpler arms (Tux).  Pulling a Homestar with invisible fingers would be the only way to go.

MASCOTS:
Tux (Ewing rendition)
Beastie (the muscley men one, or the lasseter one?)
GNU (but then that'd have to be gpl and etc)
Konqui
AROS "Kitty" (uh oh, getting too furry now let's go for humans from now on)
Bill from xBill
that anime girl from Workrave, and the lightbulb
Ren'py-tan whoever that was (two anime girls in a row)
Linux-tan (ok three)
Wikipe-tan (nooo four!!!)
DOSBox-tan (go damiet!)

Why not the lamb in the logo?

Some other I could think of:
Firefox and/or Iceweasel
Wilbert (GIMP mascot)
OpenBSD fish
Minix raccoon
Windows 7 girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luVODZZ6pk4) (-tan?)

Lambs hold guns?

Polygonized wool isn't fun?

Wormux doesn't have any problem with mascots, it seems. :P

Looked up the mascots for these just to see what they look like. I liked the Aros cat girl the most. Also to me the Aros mascot looks to cool for software and seems more like it is a mascot for a tattoo shop or some surf shop.

Didn't expect my thread to get so many replies in just a day :)

I understand fully about the licensing. Too bad though, it would have been fun to see characters like beastie etc in game :)

me too i'm in the same boat, I want a lot of favorite characters of mine in the OA game also, but we have to deal with copyrightandtrademarkandmaybepatent friendly loose expies. Kyonshi never are able to hold guns either but this is a game where space marines and gangsters shoot the fack out of the succubi teaming up with lizards and nerds on a beach does it even have to make sense?!?

Haha :)

I would have thought that Tux and Beastie would be free to use though.. a bit sad that they aren't :(

yeah it's ironic, even the "crystal tux" alternative seems as stingy the Ewing rendition.
