I start up Open Arena & fix the brightness & such then go to play a game. Then it just closes randomly sometimes after 5 minutes or 10 or 20. Just randomly closes, its starting to get annoying. It seems to last longer when I run it as an administrator & nobody seems to have the same problem sooo .. help ? Huh

in the meantime, you can play with the setting

r_overbrightBits 1

This'll not do the brightness adjustment but you'll lose overbrights.

I had this start happening to me as well when I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and played from the version in the repository.  I usually get a message about the sound system closing.

What graphic card you have ?
I wouldn't be surprised Mesa/Xorg could have been messed up, then happens what happens to you.
See if it happens with other 3D games.
Eventually check Ubuntu bugtrackers to see if this problem has been noticed.

I haven't noticed it with Nexuiz, which is the only other game with intense graphics I play regularly.  My graphics card is just a crappy Intel chip.

Well, administrator, root ... sounds almost equivalent to me.
But you're right, I wrongly assumed he was running Linux Wink
Now that explains Wink

Thing is I was thinking too about a virus when reading this topic. I wouldn't be surprised either if some nasty program was doing crap with running applications. Antivirus/ccleaner/spybot search & destroy might help in this case.
