static sound

Every once in a while during game play, the sound gets a lot of static over it for anywhere between a coupe seconds to about 10 or 15 seconds. it's extremely annoying and distracting, so any help to fix this would be very appreciated. I am using an AOC USB sound adapter (on board sound card was DOA when I built the computer) on Kubuntu 7.04. Also, it does not happen while I am in Windows.
