I dunno it this is old, everyone knows, undesirable or even illegal ?
If one of this match, please delete topic. Just wanted to help and make this game more common.

Xfire is very good to see who's online, who's playing, and where someone is playing.
Unfortunately OA is not in Xfire, but can be trick by changing the name of your openarena.exe in quake3.exe
and add this file in "Games".
OpenArena will be detected as Quake3, but you can see when one of your friends is playing OA, and even see on which server he is.
With the "Play" button you can simply join after your friend.

I dislike xfire, but if you have a lot of friends who use it, it could be convenient.
QTracker is free, and supports OA and adding "buddies", but people who alias a lot will be hard to keep track of.

Xfire is via account search, so very easy. And I understand you dislike it.
It gets more and more very commercial, but as you said, very convinient.

Btw, as in an other topic mentioned, my Xfire account is: jimmiparadise

Edit: Xfire is for free as well, of course. you can get it here http://de.xfire.com/download/
It is less on resources for your pc and supports the most games I think
