I finally found an open-source program that essentially has all the same goodies that Fraps has, without the frivolity.

http://taksi.sourceforge.net/

Dig it, and download.

note: this is windows only unfortunately. still no decent video capture for linux Sad

great find though, ill definitely give it a shot in windows.

edit: i tried it out a little bit and im not really impressed. the actual footage for some reason gets shoved to the upper left of the video and there is no sound recording (yet). the only good thing i do see so far is that it can record in many different video formats. so i wouldnt say its an alternative to fraps just yet, but could be at least for video capture once audio capture works and the video orientation is fixed.

Regarding linux capturing: http://forum.freegamedev.net/index.php?t=msg&th=272

xvidcap and vlc are the only ones that work for me so far, but I haven't managed to make them capture sound.

If you read the link you provided you get the solution. Connect your sound output to your mic input. The programs are designed for creating video tutorials. At least that should work with istanbul that I use.

There's some not-full-duplex sound cards that can't support a recording buffer and a wave buffer at the same time (and only being able to record mic, cd audio or midi)

If someone can help me put stuff into the wiki I can help with this, even if it means sending someone the info. I also will be able to show demonstrations of this as web streams which I will host. I seen there were youtube vids in one of the pages but have a flash demo of how to set up servers and stuff using a terminal which the text will not be readable using anything like that

I'm pretty busy so depend on the community for a little help, even if it's noob things Cheesy I am also able to take pm's from common people Cheesy

There is also an alt for linux I'm sure
