Hi memanny
XP can do this if it encounters a problem with any of the hardware, or if you changed some hardware and it does not like it.
Try disconnecting all but the essential hardware to see if you can find the culprit. Take out any extra cards, ie internal modem, usb card etc.
You need to test it with only Video card, RAM, HDD and keyboard. If it still behaves in this way then you should check the RAM firstly, then Video card, then Mobo.
So swap out RAM for some known to be good from another computer, be careful that the RAM is the same as yours. Your Mobo is likely to be using SD RAM and can be identified as having two notches on the bottom. If your Mobo has vacant slots with one notch as well as the SD two notch slots this means it also supports DDR RAM. Be careful here as mixing the two types of RAM will kill your Mobo, ie you can use one or the other, never both types together.
If your hardware checks out to be good but still no joy then you could try doing a repair install of XP.

Boot your PC with the XP disk, you may need to change boot order in the system BIOS to boot from CD as the first boot device. Hitting the Del key as the PC starts up will get you into the BIOS then look around for boot order usually to be found on the second property sheet (Advanced BIOS features) for Award BIOS.

When you see the Welcome to setup screen you will get to choose some options.

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER

To repair a Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R

To quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

DO NOT CHOOSE THE REPAIR OPTION HERE
instead choose the first option
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER

Press F8 to accept the license agreement and Windows will search for any existing Windows installations.
Select your installation from the list and press R to start the repair.
it will copy necessary files then reboot, don't press any key this time just let it do its thing.

Ok, this will repair the install and keep your applications and settings but it will blow off service packs updates etc, so you need to re apply them.

Hope this helps, if u need me to clarify something just ask.
