I have a couple friends and we are playing a local network game and  two of us are using protocol 68 and one is using protocol 69. I have no clue what the difference is and how to correct it so that we can all connect and play. Yes we are all using the new release 0.8.0 for linux: ubuntu hardy herin... any ideas?

AFAIK, there isn't a 0.8.0 package for Ubuntu or Debian.

0.8.0 uses protocol 70, and if you're seeing a "Protocol: ##" on the bottom left corner, you're most likely using old 0.7.x binaries with 0.8.0 game assets.  (Older versions won't print this, IIRC.)

See if you can use the binaries in http://download.tuxfamily.org/openarena/rel/080/oa080-serverfix.zip, so you won't have to download the entire game again.  (Remember to mark them executable.)

Hopefully things won't break from an incomplete upgrade somewhere, but you can download the regular 0.8.0 package again if you need to.  (You'll still need to use the oa080-serverfix.zip above, otherwise clients won't be able to join at all.)

i wonder if its really a protocol improvement, or they just change the numer so only 69/70 clients can connect to servers.

It is not a protocol improvement. It is to prevent people from seeing incompatible servers on the server list.
