MetaMod is a mod creation toolkit for OpenArena, allowing people to make OA mods with no prior programming experience!

http://metamod.linuxthugs.com/

If you can edit a text file, you can make your own MetaMod!  This initial release is an alpha release, which means:  there are bugs, and it isn't completely polished.  It works, though, so tell me what you think!

Does it have to be called MetaMod? I mean, there's already this well known thing popular on HL/HL2

http://metamod.org/

I haven't tried it yet (the premise is one of the best premises ever), but already I know that the resolution of the graphics are bad. They're non-power-of-2, so those 192x200s should be 128x128 or 256x256s, and that 1024x768 should just be a 1024x1024.

asking when OA3 will be done won't get OA3 done.
Progress of OA3 currently occurs behind closed doors alone

I do not provide technical support either.

Good point about the graphics.  I resized the "icon" graphics to 128x128;  the new graphics have been put into the current install zip.  I'll work on a better background for the main menu at 1024x1024.

As to the name...argh, I didn't know about that HL mod (don't play HL).  You have any suggestions for a better one?

Riotmod...I'm glad to see you've taken an interest in OA, and I don't mean to rain on your parade, cuz there is not a bad Idea for OA other than one's that completely violate the GPLv2.

From a functional standpoint...being completely honest and a little blunt:
This is no different from what the MissionPack UI and CVAR's already do.  Most people already know how to use these.
What I see of real usefulness of "Metamod" is the different approach it takes to this functionality.   With a little work it could perhaps evolve into a sort of scripted gametype deal...similar to what ET and RTCW (2 other notable Q3 based games do).

The OpenArena community, in my opinion needs unity more than it does mods in order to grow.  The content overall is pretty solid and constantly evolving, but to keep us as an alternative to QuakeLive, and Vanilla Quake 3, we need to keep adding new stuff.  One of those new things is the need to help 100% transition to the scripted UI that is currently part of the MissionPack (aka Q3/TA)

We could use involvement by ambitious developers such as yourself in OpenArena.   The fusion of ideas from different developers can/will help us maintain a unified community that continues to grow.

At OAX, we've had some movement in bringing this type of customization to Server owners/operators.  We possibly could use some more.
By the way, OAX is the QVM development of OpenArena.  Our changes become a part of future stock OA releases.

Sorry this is such a long post, just your situation is sort of how I got involved in OAX.   I saw what I thought was a need, developed it as a mod, posted it here, and it grabbed the interest of Sago007 enough that he created an SVN over on google code.

If this seems like something you would be interested in, PM him here on the forums.   He's a really good project administrator, in addition to being one hell of a developer.   He runs a test server full time for the latest builds of OAX, and there's a sizeable pool of forum members here that test it as well.

So to reiterate, and I cannot stress this enough.  What you have is GOOD, I think though that if we can somehow fuse the ideas, it can be BETTER, and BETTER the OA community as a whole.

Cheers

MetaMod is now known as OATk (OpenArena Tool Kit).

Has anyone still got this mod? It was cool to tinker with the settings, and I could swear I have this mod somewhere... but I don't. Also not in backups, other computers, backups from other computers, nowhere Undecided. The website is down, with Google I haven't been able to find any download mirrors at all, and the wayback machine (archive.org) hasn't stored anything from the site except the homepage from time to time.

Anyone still got a version of this? Got it. Will test and post a link soon!

I remember another mod with about the same goal, with a funny homepage and multi coloured logo with blank background, or maybe this is this one?

RMF, I read you found it.
Did you contact riotmod user by PM or email, and he sent you the latest version?

Found an old copy of OATMEAL, which was a mod with a similar concept, and was also hosted on linuxthugs.com (maybe was the same author as OATK and metamod?).

Mirrored it on my github oatmeal v0.51 here:

Glad to see that people still like the mod, and it's awesome that somebody set up a Git repo for it.

Also, yeah, I was the author of metamod and OTK.  OATMEAL was the final version of both mods.

Hi! Do you wanna write a wiki page about it, under the "DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/Mods]mods" page?
I can help if you need.

Bye!

Thanks for the free code!
Not sure how you'd release an OpenArena (not Quake3) mod without source, given it's licensed under GPLv2+?
