First, I must appologize to the admins for this thread, because it may seem oblivious and obvious ( :-) ). But while observing the gameplay of my own map, I have seen a lot of people connecting and disconnecting immediately. Maybe they just didn't want to wait for the map to download but I suspect that many of them DIDN'T HAVE THE AUTODOWNLOADING ON.

So please, I urge all of you who can't join any internet server hosting a non-standard OA map: Do the following.
In the game menu, Click "Setup" -> "Game options" -> and turn the "Automatic Downloading" "ON". That way you can join even those maps, that aren't in official OA release. The game will automatically start downloading the new map and once the download has finished, you'll be able to join the game.

It would be nice for me as a map designer to see more people slaughtering each other in my map, so that I can see, what needs improving etc... (and possibly join the game myself :-) )

I'm not sure if all that people will read the forums...

Maybe there's a way to make the autodownload option set to true by default in the next version?

I guess, that turning the Autodownload off by default makes sense. You probably don't want the newly installed game to download anything and save it to your disk unless you explicitly say that. ("What? 'Downloading map666dm: 16%'? I didn't want to download anything, you b***h! I just wanted to join this server!")

There was one server where I couldn't auto-download anything...I had auto-download turned on, but the server has it off.

I think it's best if all the server admins check to see if auto-download is on in the server, and if it isn't on, please do turn it on for the sake of us players who don't have the downloads.

I've always wondered, why didn't Quake just have an option

"This server is currently playing a map which you do not have on your system. Would you like to download it and join in? [Map is omgMB, and will take approximately wtf minutes to transfer] (Y/N)"

I guess, that turning the Autodownload off by default makes sense. You probably don't want the newly installed game to download anything and save it to your disk unless you explicitly say that.

Another solution would be to only show pure servers by default. There are a option for PunkBuster that just needs to be replaced by an option for PureServer (better with more specific filtering but maybe overkill). I don't know if this is an engine change and really should be put over to the ioquake3 development, but I think it would be a better solution.

Maybe it is a security is an issue? I don't know how much you can copy.

Some hints on the server select screen could also be a solution or a limitation of the problem.

I guess that a lot of new players are more like: "Why can't I access any servers. This game is crap"

I'd assume that anyone whose played the hell out of Quake 3 like I have, has downloaded OpenArena because they wanted a change with similar gameplay and more players than Quake 3 now. So, I'd assume they would want new maps and such too. I think I'm losin track of the topic here though. :p

No Logan I think you hit the nail on the head. Most but not all Quake 3  Players that are left, are hardcore mod specific players with their own custom maps etc. If Open arena could tap into that rescource. You would see an explosion of mods, maps, etc .

Well I'm the type of player who will make an effort to download the MODS running and the custom maps. I'll even sit in a custom map alone for a bit trying to attract some players..but no dice.

If some custom maps and mods, or at least the links to them were offered on the OpenArena download section, I'm sure we'd see an increase in people using the mods and customs. It's all about convience, and if the downloads are right there beside the main game, how easy is that?

there's also those players who believe OA doesn't support CPMA for 'personal vendetta' reasons and talk against the project

OA doesn't support CPMA because its code locks into Q3 player models.

asking when OA3 will be done won't get OA3 done.
Progress of OA3 currently occurs behind closed doors alone

I do not provide technical support either.

Well I'm not too sure what that's all about but I doubt many people are concerned about code stuff and such to that level. Iunno. I'm not, I don't even know what that is. :p

Well Logan I like to tinker as Well, and Im running certain 3rd party "Nothing from Id" modifications just to see what works and what does not. As for the statement of They are against you leileilol. "Im not so sure that will allways be the case, as sooner or later you won't be able to run standard Q3 on a Windows machine any more than Vista can run doom without something akin to dos box emulation.

I've played roughly 40 matches and I can tell you you're doing a great job the physics are good, there are only a few maps with flypaper in the textures "meaning you get stuck" I understand that your not trying to reinvent quake 3 here "which is good".. But if there are rescources available that do'nt belong to ID. Then why not tinker with them. As for those that take issue with OpenArena which I do'nt understand why they would, save "their half insane". And to them I say "Oh well" As they will upgrade them selves right out of a game sooner or later. Tongue

Well, you could always point out the fact that they are more than welcome to recode CPMA and release it under the GPL (Reverse engineering is legal in some countries...), but most of these people just want a reason to badmouth someone.

I agree with dmn_clown. And I think OpenArena is a great game for several reasons. 1st it WORKS I'm having a bear of a time getting Q3 to work with the latest nvidia drivers in Linux. 2nd It's reviving a classic and taking in a different direction. 3rd it's free but I would pay for it if such were the case simply for the other 2 reasons listed above.
