my laptop can easily run oa, but still runs at 100% cpu load the entire time oa is active.  now I have seen patches for other games that allow them to not fully use the cpu, so I was wondering if there was anything like that available for oa?

Trying to set a lower com_maxfps, and lower resolution/quality video options?
It is just an idea...

Or, if you want that your PC still uses 100%, but not slowing down other processes, you may try to use your task manager to change the process' "priority" (setting a lower priority for OpenArena, or maybe better an higher priority for the other process you are interested).

well, even at the lowest graphics setting, it still uses 100% cpu.  what I want is for it to use less than 100%

Did you set a lower \com_maxfps, too?

In general, 3D games always try to use the highest framerate your hardware can. Com_maxfps should be a limit in maximum fps, so I thought it could be able to help you (but I never tried -or, at least, I don't remember to have tried- to use it this way).

If your problem is battery duration, your laptop may be provided with a control program that allows to set various performance levels: it that case, you could be able to slow down your entire machine from Windows, saving your battery.

Yersterday I tried. Lowering com_maxfps (maybe with low resolution/quality settings) works to reduce the CPU load (obviously, you have to make some tries).
I wrote about it DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/Manual/Graphic_options#Framerate]here. Bye!
