Be aware you cannot use the data-files provided by Debian because Debian does not use qvm-files and have replaced the qvm files with empty files.

You need to download the datafiles from here: http://openarena.ws/download.php

Why do you compile the engine source on your own?

If you want to use the hacked debian data files, you'll have to use their VM_MAGIC_USE_NATIVE patches.
The debian oa source looks like a nice codebase (qvmbrute) for clientside hacks such as aimbots and wallhacks by the way.

OpenArena 0.8.1 sources? Why using those old binaries?

For mods I recommend using the latest development version of the gamecode, which is oax.
I honestly don't know where to find the full current stable code (v0.8.5).

The debian team removed q3lcc entirely, since it's not licensed under GPL. This also means that they've removed the .qvm files, as they are produced by q3lcc. The results of this is, you can't use the debian oa package do develop an oa mod. You should still be able to load mods created as qvm files (otherwise file a bug at the debian bugzilla).

In http://code.google.com/p/oax, there's a branch for 0.8.5 code. You might want to checkout that branch.

For 085 gamecode and engine sources:
(DO NOT LINK) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/Main_Page
"coding wise & other stuff" section.

PS: anyway, considering that 088 will be released soon, the suggestion is to start the mod from its gamecode just after its release, because 085 will be "old", then. Of course, now start learning to mod with 085...
