I have another question (don't want to be a question-vampire though, so take them easy and let this one rest for a while instead if it's a tough question);

Why is the default and blue skin of merman ("skin.tga" and "blueskin.tga") only half sightable, unlike the red skin of merman? I'm talking about outside of Open Arena (like in GIMP).

I was actually wondering this as I want to understand how the model system of OA works.

Because sometimes alpha channels are used for controlling speculars. There's a lot of "shader" tricks with some of them

asking when OA3 will be done won't get OA3 done.
Progress of OA3 currently occurs behind closed doors alone

I do not provide technical support either.
