As the OA wiki states, only .md3 format is currently supported.
I know there have been experiments with the .mdr format, but what about support for .obj?
It's a very useful format as a lot of modeling programs support it by default. The only con is that it doesn't support animations like .md3 does, but mapmodels don't need such thing.

The only applicable places for .obj would be mapobjects and items that don't have tags. Not worth tearing up compatibility for...

Also, for mapmodels there's already the .ase format which can be made directly in the Editor itself. Though the editor itself has support for md3, ase, lwo, 3ds, obj and picoterrain formats, but never tested them.
