Hi there,
since several days I wondered why the website won't come up (openarena.ws) and I thought it would be because of some server issues. Finally I tried to to load the site in IE and voila... it works. Well, since the new site design doesn't seem to be too uncommon I wonder why Opera won't load it up. I use Opera 9.00.
Maybe the web administrator can fix this?

The only ways to fix it are:
1. Bug Opera and protest on them because they think they're too cool and hip to support the age-old frames feature every other browser on earth pretty much supports for over 12 years. 2. Redoing the entire site. MilesTeg did one but i've yet to upload it still (and udpate mirrors etc)

Obviously you're not going to see the ideal solution:
3. Get the web admin to build a proper site that doesn't look like it's been stolen from the 90's.
Because ofcourse that would require learning CSS and why use a plane when you've got a steam boat? Steam boats don't fly fromhell, and neither do frames. They're bad practice and bad coding!

frames? FRAMES!? O_o opera supports frames. it might have a problem though that you started the frameset outside of the body... updating the index.html with http://qubodup.googlepages.com/omfg.html might help... but please just upload MilesTeg's site. um, why did you get rid of the old page again?

it was big (300kb+) and not really integrated with other pages, and also there wasn't a lot of information and the layout wasn't something I liked either. I promised a new site design on the 'start of April' and delivered. Doesn't mean it's a great one but a working rough draft prototype. It's also fast and works on old Netscapes

it also repels and disgusts all possible visitors and people even thinking about trying out the game.
early nineties surfing is not retro and cute. it's just plain ugly.

oh pulchr .. you and me have whined about it before, I'm sure. Im also sure their probably sick of hearing it I still think it was the best April fools I've seen for a along time.. It was the April fools that never was one I felt really proud that I was the first person to rumble them and a couple of days passed and wondered why it didnt suddenly burst back into life again

oh I forgot... a good point here that the admins should note. I've known people come here looking for screen shots to review the site or consider downloading it and they have thought it was a wind up. I myseld was looking for images and now its getting to the stage where OA is the LAST site to got if I want any cosmetics and gloss Maybe someone with nothing to do can do a couple of screenies from this site and other games on the platform to compare them and remember that peoples 'first impressons' usally last.

Since the site changed I've just accesed this forum directly (openarena.ws/board) - I think I twice went there by accident, but atm the oa website is more offensive than goatse. edit: it was big (300kb+)
I guess if it's bandwidth you're trying to cut down mission accomplished!

ugh.... dunno why all you kids are complaining about the site. its not like openarena.ws "has" to have nonsensical web 2.0 garbage just to be usable as a webpage. if bandwidth is a premium then i definitely applaud fromhell for using the least amount of stuff required to get information across. i do agree frames are bad, but if thats what it takes to save bandwidth then thats what it takes.
btw, the new site is nice. its like the old one cept does work in opera and looks a bit cleaner. like skankychicken stated, its nice being able to have the website up while playing OA without worrying about slowdown.

Here's another proposal. http://qubodup.googlepages.com/index.html and the zip http://qubodup.googlepages.com/oa.zipIs this blog still being used? http://community.livejournal.com/openarena/What do you think about creating a http://tumblr.com page for OA, with all additional info (screens, links, download links, svn info) covered by the wiki and having a bunch of links at the top of the mini-blog linking to the wiki pages (oa.tumblr.com) ? This would make it easier to post news, while being able to control the html 100% and not caring about bandwidth at all. THOUGHTS? PS: it was big (300kb+) Sounds rather that it was in fact a april joke and you accidentally forgot to backup the former web site, before replacing the current one.

Actually the former web site is backed up, I tend to rename things instead. I really don't like the former site anyway.

Opera has frame support of course (as stated by someone else already). If Opera loads a page and IE doesn't then usually IE fails to interpret something correct (since the site isn't written in MS standard) but for the other way round usually the site is messed up.

Actually the former web site is backed up, I tend to rename things instead. I really don't like the former site anyway. Oh okay, would you mind putting a tarball of it up? I would like to see it once more. What about my other questions? Are you fine with the solution, which requires you to edit html to post new posts or would you prefer a what you see is what you might or might not get text editor for posts? I would certainly like it, if there was an automatic rss feed for the news. And what about moving all content to the wiki, to make it generally easier to keep it updated?

I'D RATHER HAVE THE SITE TOTALLY INTEGRATED WITH ITSELF WITH LESS DEPENDENCIES ON OTHER SITES THANKS

I'D RATHER HAVE THE SITE TOTALLY INTEGRATED WITH ITSELF WITH LESS DEPENDENCIES ON OTHER SITES THANKS KTHX. I agree, less dependancy = more clean, more handy. But on the other hand, using third-party stuff makes it easier. For example you don't have to bother with installing new versions of MediaWiki or extensions for it. Are you good with the current news system (editing html in the static web site) or are you planning on installing some blog software? Would you want to install your own mediawiki on your webspace to not have to use wikia's any more? PS:I really want that RSS. or something equivalent, like an announcement-mailing list. It would help server hosts finding out about new releases for example.

rss & wysiwyg: It would be easy to use this forum (SMF) to publish news. It also supports rss feeds So no new blogging system would be needed - you just have to include some lines of php in the news-website.

The old site had a php script to read threads directly from the news forum. I'd just reuse this for the new site.
