A new Q3 engine had an article on slashdot today, it sounds interesting enough to post a link to it here http://www.xreal-project.net

looks very exciting and promising!
also, it appears that they're not just developing an engine, but want to release a game:

The aim is to push the rendering technology until it can be compared with current commercial titles and then to produce a playable Total Conversion.

The Xreal Project is quite old (started around january 2007), just the comparison and Slashdot article is new. It's a great engine, just wanted to point out that you shouldn't hold your breath until it is released...

xreal's slow, breaks compatibility, etc. Not really impressive for what I would want. It's also nvidia dependent.

asking when OA3 will be done won't get OA3 done.
Progress of OA3 currently occurs behind closed doors alone

I do not provide technical support either.

For Xreal to support the new features of more modern engines,  it meant Backwards compatibility had to be broken. So your unable to just move all Q3 based content straight over. MD3s being the biggest nightmare. Even if you did port the Q3 content over, it wouldn't look any better and would gain little or no performance gain from migrating to a more graphical heavy engine.

Though you can to a certain extent with the id Tech 4 content.  Also, using id Tech 4 content (or higher quality content) you'll also be able to take advantage of the variety of features Xreal supports.

Quake has too many engine port forks. Even branched forks, or is it forked branchs? lol.

Behold, the great Quake diaspora! Grin

xreal is a nice feature bloat engine. unfortunately I don't think tr3b will stop adding features and start fixing bugs he buried deep inside it.

WTF?
i never played xreal cause there is not realy a release yet.
But there are just 2 Bugs in the tracker. If you had found some bugs you should report them!

FUD is nothing we can use here. If there are problems with this engine, post them or be quiet.

Agreed stop with the FUD please. If I had a machine that I could test this on I would but until then I have to rely on information from others.
