Okay, so I was following these directions from the wiki:

Installation (ZIP) Edit Installation (ZIP) sectionEdit

Download the latest zip archive(s) of OpenArena from one of the Download Mirrors or BitTorrent.
Unzip the archive(s) using a program like WinZip or 7-Zip.
Open the extracted folder and launch "openarena.exe".
    Frag away!

I unzipped, opened the folder, and tried to launch openarena.exe

I got the following message in an error window:

End-of-central-directory signature not found.  Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive.  In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.

What's going on?  What should I do?  I ain't the tech savvy guy, hopefully someone here is.

By the way, I'm running under Ubuntu 11.04

Did you unzip the whole content? This sounds like if

A, you tried to unzip the file before it finished the download (check the size, it's 296 MB, might be an interrupted download) (more likely)
ccool you opened the file within the archive and it went haywire (less likely)

If the filesize is correct, reextract the folder from it. I know WinXP can open zips like folders, might Ubuntu can do that same, but that doesn't mean the folder is extracted.

Alright, I'll find the other one.

As to the file size, it actually shows as 304MB.

But yeah, that's .exe, that might be the problem.

Wait, cut that.  I was using the zip.  But the file to launch is exe.

EDIT:  Alright, I'm going for the deb...

I see, there's a few things I might not have...  I'll check.

EDIT:  I'm trying to figure out how to get OpenGL installed now.  Not sure how yet.

EDIT:  Crap, this is in waaaay over my head.  I'm gonna take a break until I can get some more info.

IIRC, the repositories have the .deb package. What about sudo apt-get install openarena?

Alright, I'll try and figure that out.  Man I feel out of water.

EDIT:  Oh, I see, that's hardware.  Nevermind.  I'll try the other two later when I get time.  Back to menial labor. Smiley

Downloading OpenAL now.  Maybe that'll do the trick.

EDIT:  Nooooope....  Guess I'll try the other one.

Okay, I'm still getting that message.  Here's the entire text that it has given me:

Archive:  /home/timothy/Downloads/openarena-0.8.5/openarena-0.8.1/openarena.exe
[/home/timothy/Downloads/openarena-0.8.5/openarena-0.8.1/openarena.exe]

a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive.  In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note:  /home/timothy/Downloads/openarena-0.8.5/openarena-0.8.1/openarena.exe may be a plain executable, not an archive
zipinfo:  cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/timothy/Downloads/openarena-0.8.5/openarena-0.8.1/openarena.exe or
/home/timothy/Downloads/openarena-0.8.5/openarena-0.8.1/openarena.exe.zip, and cannot find /home/timothy/Downloads/openarena-0.8.5/openarena-0.8.1/openarena.exe.ZIP, period.

EDIT:  OH the version through the software center is updated.  Last time I downloaded it from there it was outdated by like eight months.  Well, now that works, so I'll just let the computer do it.

Thanks for all your time!

Downloading the zip file is unnecessary when you have apt-get. Tongue

Open a console (Alt+F2 => write gnome-terminal; it's in the menu, but I don't have Ubuntu in english, so I don't know where It's located) and write sudo apt-get update; and then sudo apt-get install openarena.

A more easier way is to use Synaptic, go to System => Administration => Synaptic package manager (or something like that, I don't have Ubuntu in english, so I can't tell you) Search for the openarena and openarena-data packages and install them.

Yeah, previously when I first went to download this it only had a really outdated version on the software center and I had to do this manually on my other computer.  But now when I came back I assumed that it was still the same and the one in the software center is 0.8.5-7, so yeah...

All that time for nothing. Shocked Afro

It's all worth it though, in the end I'll pull out that rocket launcher and railgun...
