I played a while back and I swore I was going to contribute to this project, but all I ever did was just play.

I think I approached it the wrong way and I got in over my head and a bit overwhelmed by the learning curve.  I wanted to do modeling and coding.

The only problem was my lack of experience with blender and my lack of experience with any other programming languages than java and c++.  I've also never worked on a game engine before.

So this time around I'm going to take a more realistic approach to contributing.

I read somewhere on the forums that it's easier to model a character if there is a good concept drawing of it.  After looking on the-blueprints.com I realized I could probably put some of my character drawings in a template like that so that it could be easy to load into blender and use for modeling.

Right now I'm in the process of going through the wanted character list on the wiki site and making some quick sketches to post.

I figure that would be a good start and then once I get a good process down, it will be easier to turn an idea on the forum into a concept and then into the game.

Anyway, it's good to be back and hopefully this time I'll be a bigger part of the creative team while I hone my tech skills.

See you in game

Hi, that's sweet.

Character ideas are more to be considered as a source of inspiration, just a precision since you talk about "wanted" characters while I'm not sure it's an official will of the openarena project (and even if it is, feel free not to follow it, your own character ideas are welcome).

See you here or in game Wink

Thanks for the clarification.  I knew some of them weren't serious since they would violate copyright or some other unwritten rule with this project.

I think my "art direction" will be from archetypes that are commonly found in FPS games and video games in general.

I've also thought about some of the common body part combinations I've seen in CTF games.  My favorite is Tony with Skelebot head.

Also, I'm not sure if it's just because it's the default character, but Grism is the character I've seen used the most.  It's a popular character design overall but Grism also represents the lead character of the game since he's the only one that's dressed for space travel.  He's needs a rival that matches his characteristics.

And of course the best way to fill out your character roster...female characters of every male character!  Shocked

We already have Fromhell that creates sexy characters... I'd like some more "dressed" characters...

Feel like making a rival for Grism how about the cyber demon from doom since he is based on the doom space marine. It would be awesome.

Clothes and armor are harder to concept than you think because there's also the split model system and the head tag to consider

I agree.  Although I think we already have most of the parts to make this one already.

We just need to make a big demon head, put it on Gargoyles body, chop the wings, recolor to orange, fatten him up a bit, and voila.

When I was watching all the blender tutorials I noticed that you really only have to model half of a character which seems to have good and bad implications.  I've tossed out a lot of drawings thanks to this.  I'm still trying to work on drawing characters that can be modeled easily but still have epic gear.  Speaking of gear, I'm tossing another idea about character clothes in the idea pit.
