to create maps you use gtkradiant. there are several threads about this in the maps forum.

You should take a look at this link, it has some good tutorials to start for.

http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=2554.0

And of course: http://www.qeradiant.com (GTKRadiant) and http://icculus.org/netradiant/ (NetRadiant)

I'll update links now with sago's gamepack.

If you have Windows and you can't stand Radiant's UI, there's QuArK which is rearranged more like a traditional quake mapping tool. It has a load of bugs though, so be prepared.

We need a Map Ideas page @ wiki or a Map Ideas thread... just like the Character/Player model ideas pages on Wiki...

Well, what would be the first ideas?
I have a pair of them, but most of these are remakes. :/

Remake/"-ish" ideas:
- Q3CTF1ish (Dueling Keeps)
- MPQ3Team1-ish (Base Siege, from Team Arena)
- DM-Rankin-ish (UT2004)
- DM-1on1-Roughinery-ish (UT2004)
- CTF-Face-ish (UT series Tongue) [EDIT: NOT Facer2d, it sucked at how its designed :/]
- CTF-Thorns-ish (UT series 3rd party map)
- CTF-Romra-ish (UT series 3rd party map)
- Something like Fact2 (Sudden Death) from Quake II

Non-remake ideas:
- Maze-like map. An example could be my am_labyrinth, which I left out lol.
- Fight in a satellite, not like Suspended, but some kind of space map in which you can fight inside the satellite and outside of it too. Some kind of mix between DM-Hyperblast and DM-Phobos from UT.
- Some non-symmetric CTF map, kind of CTF-EternalCave and CTF-Gauntlet from UT, MPQ3Team8 (Assassins Roost) from Team Arena or Q2CTF4. (Outlands)
- Some 16/32 players map for DM/CTF, but a team of 4 members (minimum) could be required for it.
- City-themed map. Could be mixed with some chinese/japanese thematic, like some of the maps from UT3. (DM-RisingSun, DM-ShangriLa, CTF-Reflection, WAR-MarketDistrict)
- Industrial themed DM/CTF map, like oa_dm3.
- Ancient temple themed DM/CTF map, like oa_dm5.
- B-layout CTF map.
